We experimented with:
- Baby Oil & Water
- Baby Oil, Vinegar & Baking Soda
- Vinegar, Baking Soda & Bubble bath
- Vinegar & Baking Soda
Experiment 1 - Oil & Water
For our first experiment we put food coloring mixed with water, into the baby oil using a dropper. We found that the food coloring would bead up and float in the oil. When we attempted to pop the bubbles, we were not able to pop them no matter how hard we tried. When we stirred our bubbles, we were able to blend the colors together. If we stirred the mixture really fast, the bubbles would break apart into smaller bubbles. We were also able to push the smaller bubbles together to form large bubbles.
Experiment 2 - Oil, Vinegar & Baking Soda
For our second experiment we put food coloring mixed with vinegar, into the baby oil using a dropper. This experiment began similar to the oil & water experiment but we noticed that there were a few differences. We found the bubbles were not as large, and the colors seemed easier to blend together. We then added some vinegar to the pans, and this is when it became really fun! The colored bubbles began to fizz, and then there was an eruption of colors and foam. Different colors were popping up out of the white foam everywhere, similar to watching fireworks.

For our third experiment, we put some vinegar & bubble bath into our bowl. When we added the baking soda, our bowl began to erupt with bubbles. We used strawberry bubble bath, so it smelled really good too! The bubble bath allows the eruptions to last a little bit longer, as it causes the bubbles to move more slowly. This gave us a chance to observe the reaction and watch the bubbles as they slowly overflowed our bowl.

We saved the best experiment for last. For our fourth and final experiment, we filled a bowl with baking soda. Then we poured some vinegar into the bowl. Quickly this bowl erupted in true volcano fashion. We touched the flowing foam which felt soft. When the foam flow began to slow down, we added more vinegar for another explosion!
