momstown Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake Santa Claus Parade

With over 100 floats, the Niagara-on-the-Lake Santa Claus parade is one of the biggest and best in Ontario, which is why we were so excited to enter our very own momstown Niagara Christmas float this year.  Although it was a rainy day, it cleared up just in time for the parade to start and it was a balmy 8 degrees outside!

adding the final touches before the parade starts

....with a little help from my friend
I've been in a Santa Claus parade before, but sitting on a float and waving and building a float are of no comparison.  I couldn't have pulled it off without the help of my friends and family, who are always willing to lend a hand. When we pulled our resources together it all worked out!  I started out with a pickup truck and ended up with an awesome float.  I am so fortunate that everyone stepped up to help out, especially those who have their own businesses and experience with parades.  Special thanks to Dean Cartage and Sugar & Spice Retreat Spa and my husband, who while driving the truck, also kept a 2, 3 and  4 year old busy in there!  I definitely have a new appreciation for all the work that goes into creating a float, but the end result is totally worth it.  Our float was a huge hit with all of the families, especially the Santa Claus legs sticking out of the chimney and it was so rewarding to be able to bring smiles to the faces of all the kids standing along the parade route!

Santa Claus heading down the chimney

Niagara-on-the-Lake is such a charming, picturesque town, perfect for an afternoon with the family, especially during the Christmas season. When we rounded the corner and started heading down historic Queen St., I felt a rush of excitement with the hundreds of people gathered around and waiting to see us.  All the little shops had their window displays beautifully decorated for the holidays, the sound of laughing children anxiously waiting for Santa to arrive and the Christmas carols were coming from all the floats.  The magic of Christmas was in the air!  It reminded me of how exciting it was as a child to have my parents bring me to a parade.  These are memories that will last a lifetime and it's so nice to see the next generation enjoying the same traditions.

The kids loved the momstown Niagara stickers we handed out and we gave moms the gift of a free 4 week trial membership.  All in all, our first parade experience was a success.  Our float came together perfectly and we spread the word about momstown Niagara coming in January 2013!

momstown Niagara amazed by the Inspiration and Motivation gained at Conference

Beautiful lake view at Fern Resort
This weekend I attended the semi-annual momstown conference at Fern Resort for some serious brainstorming and idea sharing.  I never expected that it would be a life changing experience!  I get a little emotional as I think about all the new friends I made and all the kind words of support and encouragement I received from my fellow momstown chapter owners.  If I have ever been feeling overwhelmed, scared or nervous about becoming an entrepreneur, I have the comfort now in knowing that I have an entire support team and sense of family with these inspirational women from across Canada

Only a few months ago, while camping in the Finger Lakes Region with my sister Jillian, she mentioned this wonderful organization to me and we immediately felt the need to bring momstown to Niagara.  Becoming a mom at a young age, I can totally relate to the feeling of disconnect from friends, being at home on maternity leave and feeling bored and isolated.  I was inspired by so many ideas and success sharing stories from other momstown owners this weekend that I can't wait to start implementing in Niagara, so I can provide moms in my community the same sense of family and support that I received from my fellow momstown mamas.

We arrived in style in our Honda CRV, provided by Honda Canada at the picturesque Fern Resort in Orillia, ON, where we were absolutely spoiled  from the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out.  They are such an amazing family oriented resort, open year round.  I highly recommend every family make Fern Resort their next family getaway.  Did I mention that it's all inclusive? There are so many activities for everyone.  My arms are still sore from the zip line, which is probably geared towards the kids since my feet were dragging on the ground, but that's the kid in me!  Perhaps a fitness challenge will be implemented into our calendar of events this winter?  It's pretty sad that my arms are this sore from a seven second zip line ride!

Another sister team - momstown Edmonton
We also got down to business, boardroom style and I can honestly say I've never seen brainstorming and collaborating like this before.  Brilliant ideas bouncing off one another and productivity were apparent.  So much was accomplished here that I'm sure that boardroom had no idea what hit it!  Maybe it was the sugar high provided by Black Magic that created such a high level of energy!  Delish!  I think it was having so many brilliant minds all in the same room!

The creativity kept flowing, even into our fun time.  Try playing Mattel`s Apples to Apples with this creative group.  Not an easy win, but I tend to get pretty competitive and don't like to lose!  We also received a variety of books from Scholastic, but with so much info packed into each day I was too exhausted to open them.  I can't wait to read "I Love You, Little Bear" to my two year old this week.  And of course, you can't take a trip to Orillia without visiting Casino Rama!  We didn't win anything but that's okay.  We all came out as winners due to the success of our conference.

Jillian, Erin & Ann-Marie Burton - Founder of momstown.ca
We're headed for an incredible year in 2013.  It's amazing how momstown has grown in just five years, since it was founded by Ann-Marie Burton in 2007.  We're all so lucky to have a true leader in her, who works so hard to ensure our success and is so passionate about creating a difference in the lives of families across the country.  This experience for me was one I will never forget.  I learned so much this weekend and feel so confident in my decision to pursue self-employment, because I truly believe in what momstown's purpose is - "to connect mom's in our community" and I can't wait to share it with all of you!

Niagara chapter heads to momstown conference!

This weekend marks momstown Niagara's first attendance at the semi-annual momstown conference.  We are headed to Fern Resort in Orillia for a weekend of inspiration and motivation shared by the other momstown leaders.  What a great way to meet our fellow chapter owners and throw ourselves right into the momstown world!  This is will be a great follow up from our week of training. With hard work comes great reward,  and we are working hard so we can provide the best programming for our momstown Niagara members.

We've heard so many stories of the great things that have taken place in the past and are so excited to make new friends and learn from our peers.  Taking on a new venture can be an overwhelming experience and we are so fortunate to have such a great support team helping us along the way.

We can't wait to pass on the excitement and creative energy we bring home from this fun and inspiring weekend!

Introducing your momstown Niagara mamas!

Erin  & Jillian, your momstown Niagara mamas!

Welcome to momstown Niagara! Being mothers of two, business owners, and active members of  our community, we are thrilled to bring momstown to the Niagara region.  Balancing a successful career without having to sacrifice time with family is what made the decision to bring momstown to Niagara such an easy one.

As Niagara natives, born and raised in St. Catharines, we didn't realize how much we took for granted until we began to see our community through our children's eyes.  Now we can truly appreciate what an amazing place this is to live and raise a family.

Our vision for momstown Niagara is to create a sense of community and support for our moms, while providing  fun and educationally-based programs for families to enjoy.  We face many challenges as moms, and with all that momstown has to offer, thankfully having fun and learning with your children doesn't have to be one of them!

As mothers of young children ourselves, we understand the importance of connecting with other moms and supporting each other in a way that also positively impacts our children.  Building relationships with other moms in the community who are sharing the same experiences is the foundation of what momstown Niagara is all about.

You can be a stay-at-home-mom without having to stay at home!

We can't wait to meet you and to bring momstown Niagara to life. We're officially launching in January - stay in touch with us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, watch this blog, and sign up for our email list here.

momstown Niagara's educational programs for children ages 0-6 years old

momstown Niagara will be opening soon in January 2013! Many wonder what exactly is momstown and how will we help connect local Niagara moms and tots?

momstown’s 6 Program Pillars define our event curriculum. momstown has always been very focused on the whole child, the complete family and early education and our pillars give us a stronger foundation from which to build that awareness. We want to build awareness that momstown is not “just” a convenient playgroup. We’re so much more.

Art & Music: developing creative minds

Literacy: commitment to early education
Nutrition: food, friendship & fun
Science & Discovery: Inspiring curiosity together
Fitness & Adventure: encouraging family activity
Play & Social: the heart of momstown

We’ve picked the very best programs running from our many chapters and created places for them in every momstown across Canada.

Within our 6 pillars, every chapter will deliver our top 10 programs (and more+) as the foundation of their activities. here's a sampling:
