Scholastic Baby Basics with momstown Niagara

This month Scholastic Canada provided us with the sweet story, "Welcome, Baby" by Barbara Reid, which explores the joys of bringing home a new baby and the hopes and dreams moms & dads have for them!  Our babies aged 0 -12 months, along with their mom's enjoyed this story at our Baby Basics event.  This is a great way of introducing books and early literacy to infants.  It's never too early to start reading to your baby and this event is a great way to connect with other moms in our community.  It takes place at Chapter's in St. Catharines every month.

We are provided with two of these great books every month and two lucky babies get to take them home to add to their own collection!  The lucky winners this month were Emmett & Quinn!

After story time, we had a blast making pop-up penguin crafts to bring our monthly theme, "Polar Animals" to a close.  Our mama's loved watching their baby's little eyes light up when the penguin poked his head out of the cup and the babies loved the surprise!

Scholastic Canada also generously provides us books for our monthly Tales for Tots event, which is great for our 1 - 6 year olds.  This event is also held at Chapters!

momstown Niagara's Family Fun Day with Fisher-Price

One of our favourite partners and supporters of momstown is Fisher-Price and we are so thrilled to have them as part of our Family Fun Day!

Fisher-Price has very generously provided our families with four gifts to play with throughout our Family Fun Day, which we will then raffle off to some lucky families!

Be sure to come by the Fisher-Price Play and Learn station to check out these great gifts!

First we have the Fisher-Price Say Please Tea Set.  This fun and educational set teaches children ages 6-36 months about numbers, shapes, opposites, manners and greetings.

When you tilt the teapot it plays tunes!

Next is the Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium.  This is for children from 0+ and helps promote comfort and security, stimulates the senses, and enhances learning through discovery.

You can choose from 5 soothing tunes, 3 aquatic sounds, or a medley of all!

We also have the  Laugh and Learn Click 'n Learn Remote.  For children 6-36 months this remote plays 25+ sing-along songs, tunes and phrases.  It teaches numbers, opposites, shapes, colours, and more!

Pressing a variety of buttons promotes development of fine motor skills!

And for the wee ones out there we have the Fisher-Price My Little Snugabunny Cradle and Swing.

What a plush place for your little bunny to snuggle into! The softest of fabrics surround baby as she gazes at herself in the mirror on the motorized mobile and watches birdie friends fly by. A variety of music and motion soothes and engages her, along with a little plush bunny friend to keep her company.

A Niagara Valentine's Day Surprise!

Valentine's Day is an extra special day in our house as it is also my husband's birthday.  We feel very strongly that everyone deserves to have one special day every year that is all about you.  This is difficult when you share your birthday with a special event.

I have a friend whose birthday is right before Christmas so every year another friend randomly picks a day throughout the year to celebrate her special day.  It doesn't happen right on her birthday but at least she gets to have a day that is all about her!  This made me feel that I needed to make my husband's birthday extra special.

On mine and Jim's first Valentine's Day together I felt really guilty accepting a gift from him and I felt terrible that he had to share his special day with pretty much everyone in the world.  I tried hard the next year to do something really special and surprise him but low and behold, he beat me to the punch and planned Valentine's Day at our favourite Niagara restaurant and bought me a beautiful necklace!

The next year we had a brand new baby and we decided to stay close to home.  He surprised me with an amazing dinner in  and a beautiful bracelet.  You can imagine how I felt giving him a lousy new pair of jeans.  From that moment on I decided that Valentine's Day was no longer Jim's birthday.  We would celebrate Valentine's Day with the rest of the world and do something extra special on another day.

The next year I planned a surprise party for him at a local pub a week before his birthday.  He was definitely surprised and thrilled that his friends could all come because they weren't celebrating Valentine's Day with their significant others.  The next year I waited until after his birthday.  Just when he thought I wasn't going to celebrate it at all, I surprised him with dinner at our favourite restaurant and then a night out with all of our friends.

We work very hard at keeping the fun in our relationship and surprises are a big part of it.  We both LOVE surprises and it does get difficult to top each other year after year.

This year Jim totally blew me away by having local artist Jordan Newhouse paint "Chardonnay Rows in Summer."  The painting is beautiful and something I would NEVER have guessed that he would have done for me.  He's still got it after all these years!  He even hung it on the wall so I saw it when I came into the room.

I will feel no guilt, however, when he receives my gift this year.  When I sat down to think about what my husband would love more than anything I realized parties and fancy gifts isn't it.  Each year we are trying to outdo each other  but the truth is, we both already have everything we want.  How can I make OUR FAMILY his birthday gift?  Simple answer: Fern Resort!

We will spend four days at the family resort in Orillia.  We don't have to fly anywhere - it is just a few hours drive north of here and the most kid friendly place I have ever been!

It may not be the romantic getaway that other couples would plan but I know it is exactly how my husband will want to celebrate his special day - with his family!

And the best part is, he doesn't know yet.  He will be finding out the same as you when he reads this blog.

Happy Birthday Darling!  I Love You!

Top 10 Things I Love The Most About My Family

I'm sure most people would agree that the meaning of Valentine's Day changes drastically once you have children.  Even the way we celebrate is different than in the past.  I don't know about you but I have to say my favourite Valentines are the ones my little guys make for me themselves with their daddy every year!

With all the talk about love and relationships at this time of year, it makes me think about all the things I love and cherish about my family.  I'd like to think I am grateful for them year round but things get busy and hectic and sometimes these little things that I adore so much get taken for granted.  It was difficult to narrow this list down but here are my favourite things about my family.

10.  Being Silly.  I grew up in house where we laughed all the time.  Mostly we were just laughing at each other but I always remember finding something funny in everyday events.  I find these moments now with my own family priceless.  Silliness is always encouraged in our house!

9.  Going for walks.  In the summer the boys take their bikes and in the winter they put on their snow suits and we pull them in the sled.  Anytime of the year I love taking walks with my family and holding hands with my main man!

8.  Rainy Days.  These aren't fun for most people but I love any excuse to keep my pajamas on all day and snuggle up on the couch and watch movies with the gang!

7.  Singing in the car.  We always have music in the car and even though it is a selection of Fred Penner, Disney Junior songs or Fisher-Price tunes, we know all the words and we love to sing them!

6.  Birthdays.  I firmly believe that every person is entitled to one day every year that is dedicated to just them.  My husband feels the same way and is known for trying to outdo his previous surprises every year.  You would think I would have caught on by now but he manages to keep it from me each year!  Our boys birthdays are very close together and right around Halloween so every year we throw a big Halloween party and invite all of our family and friends.  It is one of my favourite days of the year!

5.  Toboganning.  This is something I never liked as a child myself so when my boys were old enough to go my husband was so excited to take them.  I considered staying home and taking advantage of an empty house but the excitement on their faces made me want to go with them - even if it was only to take some good pictures.  I can't remember ever having so much fun while being so cold!  I am now the person jumping up and down with excitement at the threat of a snow storm.!

4.  Dinnertime.  As a child we always ate as a family at the dinner table and it is something I still feel very strongly about.  We live such busy lives and I love being able to count on at least that time together each day.  My husband and I always ask lots of questions about the boys day and ask them their favourite things about each day.  They usually talk more than they eat and dinner is usually an hour long but it is one of the most valuable hours of my day.

3.  Sunday Morning Breakfast.  Sunday is a dedicated family day and it always starts with the boys choosing what we will eat for breakfast.  Sometimes we make it together and sometimes we go out but it almost always involves pancakes!

2.  Bedtime.  Not always for the obvious reason but for the special time together right before the boys go to bed.  Ian and Justin each choose a story and we cuddle up together and read them.  They smell so good after just having a bath and they love sitting in my lap (it gets more and more difficult as they get bigger) and listening to daddy and I read the stories.  I kiss their faces until they ask me to stop and then I close their doors and hope they have sweet dreams!

1.  Morning Snuggles.  This is by far my favourite moment of every day.  Each morning the boys get up around 7 and come running into our bed.  They jump up in between my husband and I and put their little cold feet on our backs to warm them up.  We stay there for about 30 minutes giggling and watching cartoons until we have to get up and start our day.  I think it is the thing I will miss the most when my boys are all grown up and I make a point of appreciating how special those moments are every morning.  And then the chaos begins!

Things change so quickly and I am excited to see what this list will look like for me next year!

Family Day Event in Niagara: momstown Niagara Family Fun Day!

momstown has just launched it's newest chapter here in Niagara and we are anxiously awaiting our big launch event, Family Fun Day on February 18th, 2013 presented by Sugar & Spice Retreat Spa!  It will be from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn & Suites Convention Centre at 327 Ontario St. St. Catharines.

As mother's of young children, we came across the same challenge every year since Family Day was named our newest statutory holiday in Ontario and that challenge was trying to find something to do with our families on this day.  We really wanted to make the most of our day off, but with most businesses closed,  we ended up staying in and watching movies.  When we opened momstown Niagara in January we knew we wanted to plan a big launch party and we immediately agreed that Family Day would be a perfect fit for the Niagara Region.

This is a free event and is open to the public.  We are accepting non-perishable food donations, or $1 per family with proceeds going to Community Care.We have so many things planned that will entertain the whole family.

For the kids:

For the parents:

We have so many demonstrations scheduled throughout the day including; car seat installations, yoga with Zuddha Yoga, Huggaloops, live music and our ribbon cutting ceremony with Jim Bradley, our MPP for St. Catharines.  Swag bags will be handed out to the first 100 moms to enter and our raffle table will be jam packed with amazing prizes!  We are astonished with the overwhelming support we've received from our local businesses and Niagara residents and are so excited to see the day unfold.  This is what momstown is about: bringing our community together and creating a sense of family in this amazing region that we are so privileged to call home!

Free Eye Exams and Glasses for Jr. Kindergarten Students in Ontario

Did you know your child is eligible for a free eye exam and a free pair of glasses (if required)? momstown Niagara is helping to raise awareness of the Eye See...Eye Learn® Program in Ontario, that promotes eye exams for children starting as young as 6 months of age.

It is particularly important for school aged children to have eye exams before entering the school system as they may not "know" that they are not seeing everything the same as others. This was familiar to me as I watched Sarah's Story a video that demonstrates the importance of getting your child's eyes checked early.   My son received his first pair of glasses when he was in grade three.  I assumed that since my husband and I don't have vision problems that he wouldn't either.  We noticed him squinting all the time and decided to have his eyes examined and I really wished we had gotten his them checked sooner!  It turns our he requires a very strong prescription and didn't see clearly until he was 8 years old!

The Ontario Association of Optometrists recognizes the important link between eye health and learning, and recommends comprehensive eye examinations for all children entering kindergarten. The Eye See...Eye Learn® program will help make sure our kindergarten students get the best start to learning.
Read below to find out the solution offered by the OAO.

Problem

·         Each year, fewer than 10 per cent of children have an eye exam before entering school, despite the fact that 25 per cent of all children have a vision problem significant enough to impair their ability to learn.[i] Eye exams can also detect asymptomatic, but potentially life-threatening, eye conditions.

o   Five to 10 per cent of preschool children have an undetected vision problem[ii]

o   Approximately 60 per cent of children with literacy problems have an undiagnosed vision problem[iii]

o   80 per cent of all learning is visual,[iv] so children who cannot see the board or focus on a picture or follow words in a book may struggle to achieve their full learning potential

o   Vision problems can impact a child’s hand-eye coordination for physical activities and even their social development

Solution:

·         To ensure Ontarians understand the importance of comprehensive eye examinations for children, the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) has launched a video called Sarah’s Story and expanded the Eye See…Eye Learn® program.

o   The Eye See…Eye Learn® program allows children entering Junior Kindergarten to receive a comprehensive eye examination, provided by a Doctor of Optometry

o   If the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive them free of charge through the program

o   The eye exams for children are covered under provincial health insurance (or OHIP) when you show the child’s health card, meaning that there is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam

o   Comprehensive eye examinations enable Doctors of Optometry to diagnose and treat children with eye health and vision problems before they begin grade one

·                   Doctors of Optometry, in comparison to opticians, are able to test and diagnose  eye disease through an oculo-visual assessment[v]

·         OAO’s video, Sarah’s Story, highlights the value that regular eye examinations by a Doctor of Optometry can provide for children with undiagnosed vision and health-related problems

Vision

·           OAO encourages all parents across the province to ensure their children’s eyes are examined by a Doctor of Optometry at 6 months of age, three years of age and then every 12 months after that (or as recommended by an optometrist). Parents in participating regions are encouraged to book their children for their Eye See…Eye Learn® exam.

o   Data from nine participating regions show that for nearly 81 per cent of the children participating in the ESEL program, the ESEL eye exam is the child’s first eye exam

o   On average, 12 per cent of children that are receiving their first eye exam through participation in the ESEL program are prescribed glasses

§  In some regions this number is as high as 16 per cent
